Spring 2021 update

RPLL Community,

On December 14, the California Department of Public Health released guidelines for a return to play for youth and adult recreational sports.  The RPLL Board of Directors want to share our thoughts on what these new guidelines could mean for a Spring, 2021 season.  Here is a link to the guidelines if you would like to learn more: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/outdoor-indoor-recreational-sports.aspx.

The State segmented sports by risk factors associated with playing that sport.  Baseball was placed in the Outdoor Moderate Contact group which is the second lowest risk group of sports and includes sports such as softball, cheerleading, and kickball.  This group is clear to resume games when the county that they will play in is placed in the Red tier related to risk of Covid-19 infection.  As you likely know, San Diego County is currently in the Purple tier which is the highest risk tier.  The Red tier is the next lowest tier and the County was in this tier as recently as late November.  We are optimistic that the County will be back in the Red tier this Spring, in time for RPLL to have games.

Currently, the State is encouraging citizens to engage in outdoor recreation that can be done with social distancing in place.  This would include RPLL assessments and practices as long as we maintain "cohorts" (within a single team only) and practice social distancing.  We anticipate having assessments in early February and starting practices in February and March.

The State has communicated that sports may resume competition for the lowest risk sports as soon as January 25, based on a number of conditions. The State has committed to providing an update no later than January 4.  Again, San Diego County will need to be in the Red tier for baseball games to take place but as soon as the state gives us permission to play, RPLL will be ready.  To ensure that you are ready with us, you can register at rpll.org.

In the guideline released, RPLL is proud to say that most of the requirements were part of our Fall program and were already included in our Safety Plan.  However, one new update from the guidelines is that based on the current guidelines, we will be enforcing a mandatory mask wearing policy for players when they are not actively engaged in practice (to/from practice, waiting to warm up, etc.).

Each year we document a Safety Plan and submit to Little League International for approval.  This will be completed prior to the end of the year and we will host one or more community meetings in January to review our Safety Plan as it relates to Covid-19 procedures and how this will affect the Spring season.

The RPLL Board was relieved to receive the guidance from the State after many months with no guidance and consider the contents of the guidance positive for RPLL and the likelihood of our Spring season including games.  We look forward to offering a safe, fun, recreational and competitive opportunity for the members of our community this Spring.

We hope the RPLL community had a safe, happy holiday!!
