Getting Started
1. What does an RPLL manager do?
The manager oversees all aspects of the team, including practices, games, and communication with parents. You’ll work with coaches and league volunteers to ensure the players have a fun, safe, and educational experience.
2. Do I need prior baseball or softball experience to manage a team?
No! While experience can be helpful, the league provides training and resources to help you learn everything you need to know.
3. How much time will I need to commit?
The time commitment varies around ~6 hours a week, but typically involves:
1-2 practices per week (usually 2 hours each)
Weekly games (about 2 hours)
Pre-season preparation, team organization, and game-day preparation
Optional team activities and communication
Most managers find the time commitment very manageable, especially when they share responsibilities with assistant coaches and team parents.
Training and Support
4. What kind of training will I receive?
Managers and Assistant Managers receive required training per Little League International guidelines. RPLL offers coaching clinics, online resources, and mentorship from experienced coaches. These resources cover everything from game rules to practice drills.
5. Will I have help during practices and games?
Yes! RPLL-approved assistant coaches, team parents, and other volunteers will support you. You’re not alone in this role.
6. How will I know the league rules and regulations?
Our online RPLL Manager Toolbox provides you with a wide variety of resources, along with a summary of key rules and regulations.
Managing the Team
7. What if I can’t make a game or practice?
RPLL approved assistant coaches or volunteers can step in temporarily. Communication is key to ensuring smooth coverage.
8. How do I communicate with parents?
In addition to league-approved and provided tools like GameChanger, many managers use group text apps, email chains, or other tools like TeamSnap to share schedules, updates, and reminders.
9. What if there are conflicts or difficult parents?
RPLL provides guidance on conflict resolution. The Coach Coordinator and Player Agents are also available to help mediate issues.
Coaching Concerns
10. I don’t know how to run a practice. Can I get help?
Absolutely! The league may provide sample practice plans and drills upon request, and experienced managers can mentor you.
11. What if I don’t know how to teach certain skills?
Coaching resources, including videos and guides, are available on the Little League website to walk you through drills and skill-building techniques.
12. How do I handle players who are struggling or misbehaving?
RPLL emphasizes positive coaching. The Coach Coordinator and Player Agents can help provide strategies for managing behavior and helping players develop skills at their own pace.
Logistics
13. Who sets the schedule for practices and games?
The league schedules all games and practices, and provides guidelines for scheduling changes or adjustments.
14. Do I need to provide equipment?
RPLL provides team equipment including catcher’s gear, game/practice balls, wiffle balls, and hitting tees. Players typically bring their own gloves, bats, helmets, and cleats. Additional equipment requests can be submitted to the league to support player needs.
15. How are teams formed?
Teams are built by the league alongside team managers through an assessments and draft process to ensure balance and fairness.
Personal Concerns
16. What if I don’t feel confident in my abilities?
Many first-time managers feel this way! Lean on the support of our RPLL family and remember that the goal is fun and growth, not perfection.
17. What if I don’t have enough time?
Our league appreciates any time you can dedicate. Sharing responsibilities with assistant coaches and team parents can lighten the load.
18. Will I have to deal with injuries?
Our RPLL Safety Officer will provide guidance on handling injuries. First-aid kits and AEDs are provided at our fields, and each team has a dedicated Safety Parent who is there to support you during baseball events.
Benefits of Managing
19. What if I enjoy it and want to continue?
Great! Many managers come back year after year. The league supports your growth and provides additional resources to enhance your skills.
20. Why should I volunteer to manage a team?
Being a manager allows you to positively impact young athletes, strengthen community connections, and create lasting memories for yourself and your family.
Imagine being the adult who helps a child discover their potential, who turns a moment of frustration into a breakthrough, who teaches that success is about showing up, effort, and heart—not just winning.
In RPLL, you're not just coaching baseball; you're building confidence, teaching teamwork, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
This is your chance to be more than a coach—to be a mentor, a role model, and a transformative force in a young person's life.
